Servicing Modern Gas and Water Industries for more than 150 Years

The History of Mueller
Mueller Co. had its beginning in 1857 when Hieronymus Mueller, a German immigrant, opened a small gun shop in Decatur, Illinois. During those early years, he was engaged in making keys, guns and other devices as well as repairing sewing machines. In later years, he became interested in the "Horseless Carriage", actually designing and building one of the first automobiles, the Mueller-Benz!
Mr. Mueller's fine inventive talent led to the design of a machine which allowed water taps to be made under pressure. From this original patent have grown the many pressure devices and equipment for the control of gases and fluids which the Company manufactures today.
For more than a century Mueller Co. has played a major role in the dramatic advance of the modern gas and water utility, making our lives safer and more comfortable. Today, the Mueller name represents a growing diversity of flow control products. They are used in water and gas distribution, water and waste water treatment, oil production, food and beverage processing and pharmaceutical production.

Mueller Canada
As Mueller Co. turned from the 19th century to the 20th century, it found itself to be an expanding company. A considerable volume of products was being shipped into Canada from a warehousing operation in New York.  By 1912, the Company was convinced of the need for a manufacturing facility in Canada to meet the needs of Canadian customers.  A site was chosen in Sarnia, Ontario.
Starting under the name of H. Mueller Mfg. Co. Ltd., the name was changed to Mueller Limited and remained so until 1985. Success resulted in several plant expansions and in 1963 a second plant was aquired in St. Jerome, Quebec. In 1985, Canada Valve was purchased and the two companies were restructured, becoming Mueller Canada Inc. and Canada Valve. The Canada Valve operation split with the distribution and marketing group remaining as Canada Valve and the manufacturing facility at Milton, Ontario becoming part of Mueller Canada Inc.
In 1986, the Mueller Company, which included Mueller Canada Inc., was purchased by Grinnell Corporation which put Mueller under the Tyco Laboratories umbrella.  As of 1992 all the companies of Grinnell Corporation of Canada have been recognized to become part of Tyco Laboratories of Canada, Inc.
20 years later, Mueller Company was purchased by Walter Industries who restructured the company by moving the manufacturing back to the sister companies in the United States.  Then in December 2006, Walter Industries spun off Mueller Water Products which included Anvil, Mueller Company and US Pipe.  Mueller Water Products is a publicly traded company.  Currently Mueller Canada operates two distribution centres, one in Barrie, Ontario and one in Calgary, Alberta while still operating the Foundry in St. Jerome, Quebec.
For more than a century, Mueller has played a leading role in the dramatic advance of the modern gas and water utility.  In the years to come, we will continue to respond to the needs of these industries.
